Though We Don’t Understand

Magale Orphanage Center was started because of tragedy. Mt. Elgon is notorious for landslides that can wipe out villages in seconds especially during our rainy seasons. This can leave not only people homeless and hurt but it leaves behind many orphans who will struggle to survive unless someone steps in. These children are not scooped up by a government organization to help with humanitarian aid. This is where we stepped up as a church to create an orphanage where we tend to about 150 children.

Sadly, despite our best efforts, sometimes our plans don’t go as we had hoped. While our heart is to take care of these kids disease and sickness does happen. We recently had 5 children contract malaria. It is not something we can do much about as it is carried by mosquitos and if caught early enough and depending on the person they can recover but many times it can be a long process and sadly, sometimes it just moves too fast and can kill despite treatment.

This week, one of our orphans passed away in the hospital. 13 yr old Joan fought bravely but eventually her body just shut down and the Lord brought her home. I reached out to a friend in the U.S.A. because the hospital refused to release her body until the bill had been paid in full. The person was able to help us out and get Joan’s body released so we could bring it back home, mourn her passing, and put her body to rest.

Many of our children are quite upset. Many are asking why this happened as this isn’t a normal occurrence here. Please be praying for us and these children. They have lost so much and have found they are a family here and this clearly is a huge family loss in their eyes as well as for the staff that pour their hearts into these children. If anything, can you just pray right now for us as we grieve the loss of this little one?
